Finally putting a definition next to smart-casual
I've always been a massive fan of brogues, for a number of reasons.
Firstly, their versatility - you can literally wear them with anything, jeans, dresses, skirts, cropped trousers. I'd avoid wearing with beach wear, but that is genuinely the only outfit choice I would consider a bad move to combine with brogues. Other than that - you're good to go.
Secondly, they look smart - but oh so casual at the same time. So not only do they offer versatility, they also give you a bit of guaranteed contradiction - if that's what you're looking for in a shoe? (you never know).
Thirdly, they're so good looking - they're not meant to be sexy, they're not meant to be flirty - they are in definition more man-repelling than attracting - see www.manrepeller.com and you'll see what I'm on about. This, however, does not detract from their beauty - the shoe shape is structured and ordinary, yet it offers an elegance and really a British charm that no other shoe can give.
